Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about rubber and decorative surface installations.

Installation & Surface Information

Poured-in-place rubber surfacing is a seamless system made from rubber granules mixed with a binding agent and applied directly over a prepared base such as concrete. The material cures in place to create a durable, slip-resistant surface commonly used for pool decks, patios, walkways, playgrounds, and recreation areas.

The lifespan of rubber surfacing depends on the material type, environmental exposure, and maintenance. With proper installation and regular cleaning and sealing, poured-in-place rubber surfaces can perform for many years in both residential and commercial environments.

Rubber surfacing systems generally stay cooler than many traditional hard surfaces when exposed to sunlight. Surface temperature can vary depending on color choice, sun exposure, and surrounding conditions. Lighter colors typically remain cooler than darker colors.

Most poured-in-place rubber systems can be installed over structurally sound concrete surfaces after proper preparation. Surface condition and preparation requirements are evaluated before installation to ensure proper adhesion and performance.

Project Approvals & Requirements

Usually not. Most installations are located in the back of the property, such as pool decks or patios. However, requirements vary by community, so homeowners should confirm with their HOA before scheduling installation.
If approval is required, HOAs typically request documentation such as contractor license and insurance information, product specifications, design details, materials, colors, textures, and the location of the installation. Specialty Surfaces can provide the necessary information about the materials and installation process when needed.
Most pool deck projects involve resurfacing over existing concrete or other surfaces, so permits are typically not required. However, HOAs may still request design details, samples, or approval for surfaces located near the front of the property.
A variance fee may be required for certain commercial projects depending on county regulations. When required, Specialty Surfaces handles and pays the variance fee as part of the project approval process.

Installation, Cost & Maintenance

Installation timelines depend on the size of the project, surface preparation requirements, and weather conditions. After evaluating the site, Specialty Surfaces provides an estimated installation schedule.
Project cost depends on several factors including surface size, preparation or demolition requirements, design complexity, materials selected, and the number of installation days required.

Maintenance depends on the type of surface and environment.

  • Most surfaces should be pressure washed once or twice per year
  • Residential rubber pool decks typically require sealing about every 5 years
  • Epoxy stone surfaces typically require sealing every 2 years
  • Wet play areas exposed to chlorine may require cleaning and sealing every 2–3 years
  • Garage floors can be vacuumed and wet mopped as needed

Specialty Surfaces also provides cleaning and sealing services.
